Kevin Costner to the rescue!

Written by

Kim Katz with Kevin Costner at the House of Blues in ChicagoLast month my column was about the lame quality of my dreams at night and how I seem to be unable to dream about anything with more than a PG-13 rating. Well, this month I get to write about a dream that came true, literally.

“Kevin Costner to the rescue! Dreams really do come true...”

Last month my column was about the lame quality of my dreams at night and how I seem to be unable to dream about anything with more than a PG-13 rating. Well, this month I get to write about a dream that came true, literally.

I have been writing about artists of all kinds and interviewing stars for about three years now. I always write positive reviews - glowing reviews - because I am an artist too and know firsthand just how hard an artist’s life really is. I know what it’s like to have your band pack a club and get ripped off by the bar owner only to leave dejected and broke having lost money. I know what it feels like to get rejection slips in the mail. I know what it’s like to think yet another opportunity is finally your big break, and tell your whole family, only to have it crumble like sand a few months later.

It doesn’t matter to me if the artists are on the A-list or the D-list - the people I seek out to support are on the SHE-List - my list of artists who have given me hope and inspiration over the years. Maybe when I was a teen, maybe at twenty, or thirty, I listened to their music or watched their films over and over and felt I was absorbing their genius.

Kim Katz and Kevin Costner

Last year Kevin Costner totally and pleasantly surprised me by sending a thank you note with praise for my article on his band to me through his manager within 48 hours of the review appearing online. A few weeks ago, it was Kevin, again - Hollywood royalty? Heck, he’s on a list all by himself. Kevin tracked me down in Vegas and, out of the blue, invited me to his band Modern West’s performance in Chicago and inadvertently made a dream come true for me, my mom, and my friends here at Buzz as well!

I felt so touched that night; I got the opportunity to watch a wonderful sound check, was introduced by Kevin to his close friends as a person whose work he admired, and attended the after-party where he was so nice to my mom. His kindness and handsomeness blew me away. I admit it. I mean, come on ladies... he’s white hot... And there was also a very strong sense of deja vu. That night I found this entry from the dream diary I keep daily, from a year ago dated June 7th of 2007:

“I dreamt that I was shooting some kind of film project with Kevin Costner. Kenny was holding the camera. Kevin had on a crisp, white, long sleeved shirt, unbuttoned to the chest... We laughed and joked around about who was the boss and where to place the camera and furniture... Kevin seemed to like Kenny ... I felt like my smile kept flashing and disappearing behind a collar or something that went up to my cheek, that he was watching me smile a lot...”

I was stunned. In the interview we shot that day for my new show The Greenroom with Kim Katz, Kevin was wearing the white shirt. Kenny (Payne, Buzz Editor) was filming us. We did talk a few minutes before we started about which way to shoot the interview and whether to sit or stand, etc. And a detail I could never have guessed at a year ago - I ended up wearing a new gold silk blouse I had bought in Chinatown just weeks before the interview with a starched stand up mandarin collar.

What tha-? Wow! How did that happen? Magnificent destiny! So, thank you, sweet, considerate, appreciative, gifted and gorgeous, Kevin Costner, for showing me that dreams really can come true! Now I can’t wait to go to sleep tonight and see what’s coming next!
